Wherever I am, the world comes after me.
It offers me its busyness. It does not believe that I do not want it.
Now I understand
why the old poets of China went so far
and high
into the mountains, then crept into the pale mist.

Dr. Reuben Ramas Cañete, Associate Professor of the Asian Center, has received a UP Arts Productivity Award and has been named UP Artist I.

Given each year, the UP Arts Productivity Award recognizes exemplary artists who “consistently bring honor to the university through their award-winning creative works in the different arts.”

Awardees are selected based on a stringent set of standards, including publications record, presentations, and performances, and standing in the professional community of local and international artists. The awarding ceremony took place in early August.

Over the last several years, Dr. Cañete has published nine books, nearly 20 peer-reviewed articles, and numerous essays, reviews and book chapters. His work has centers mostly on political aesthetics, masculinity studies, and the preservation and promotion of local artistic traditions in Cebu and Bulacan.  Visit his faculty profile to see his most recent publications.

Also, Dr Cañete also serves Assistant to the Dean for Cultural Affairs. He is presently overseeing the operations of the Asian Center.  In November, he became a member of the Executive Council of the National Committee for Visual Arts, National Commission for Culture and Arts, where he will serve from January 2014 to December 2016.
