ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

CHIHO OGAYA
Chiho Ogaya is a professor of sociology at the Faculty of Letters, Ferris University in Yokohama, Japan. She studied transnational sociology and migration studies at the Graduate School of Hitotsubashi University. She has been doing research on Filipino migrant women and their families, the social organization of migrant domestic workers in the Asian region, and published many articles both in Japanese and English. Currently, she is researching the topic of children and migration, such as 1.5 generations of Filipinos in Canada, Japanese Filipino Children's identities through their mobile childhoods, and the roles of support NGOs. She has been working with the support and empowerment activities for JFC and their mothers with civil society both in Japan and the Philippines. She is currently the chair of the Commission of Gender Equality of the City of Yokohama and the vice chair of the Commission on the Promotion of Multicultural Policy of City of Kawasaki, Japan. MATTHEW M. SANTAMARIA, DOCTOR OF LAW
Dr. Matthew Santmaria is Professor and the Assistant to the Dean for Cultural Affairs at the UP Asian Center. He obtained his Doctor of Law in Political Science in Kyoto University. He handles courses in Asian Studies and Philippine Studies at the UP Asian Center.
ARIEL C. LOPEZ, PH.D.
Dr. Ariel Lopez is Associate Professor and teaches courses on culture, society, and history of Southeast Asia, in particular Indonesia at the Asian Center, UP Diliman. He obtained degrees in History at Leiden University, The Netherlands. He was recently a visiting researcher at Linnaeus University, Sweden as part of the research program “Historical Treaties of Southeast Asia.”

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Authors of selected semi-finalists of the 6th Japanese Research Development Competition will come together for the second phase of the competition. This one-day writing workshop aims to critique the papers through selected reviewers.

COMPETITION PRIZES AND PUBLICATION OPPORTUNITY

•     The most well-developed research papers will be judged as winners of the competition.
•     Winners will get the latest Apple iPad from the Japan Foundation Manila.
•     All finalists will have the chance to publish in the Asian Studies: Journal of Critical Perspectives on Asia.

PHASE 3: RESEARCH PAPER PRESENTATIONS FOR SHORTLISTED PROPOSALS

•     All finalists will be required to do an oral presentation during a public forum in March 2024. The presentation must not exceed 15 minutes.
•     Failure to present their papers means ineligibility for the competition prizes. Presentations by proxies are not allowed.

The Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman offers M.A. degrees in Asian Studies with four fields of specialization: Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia.
