Professor Vina Lanzona, Director of the Center for Philippine Studies and Associate Professor in the Department of History, University of Hawai’i at Manoa, visited the Asian Center last 22 July 2014. She met with Dean Eduardo Gonzalez and Professor Eduardo Tadem to discuss possibilities for cooperation in the field of Philippine Studies between the University of the Philippines Diliman and the University of Hawaii. Areas of cooperation may include a study-abroad program and faculty exchanges.

Professor Lanzona is the author of Amazons in the Huk Rebellion: Gender, Sex, and Revolution in the Philippines. She finished her BA at the Ateneo de Manila University, her MA in Historical Studies at the New School for Social Research in New York, and her Ph.D. in Southeast Asian History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She currently teaches subjects in modern Philippine and Southeast Asian History, Women and Revolution, and general courses in Asian Civilizations and Cultures.

The Asian Center offers M.A. programs in Asian Studies; areas of specialization include Northeast Asian Studies, Southeast Asian Studies, South Asian Studies, and West Asian Studies. It also has an M.A. in Philippine Studies program, in which students can major in Philippine sociocultural studies; Philippine foreign relations; or Philippine development studies. A Ph.D. Philippine Studies program is jointly offered with the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
