The UP Asian Center, in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, will be hosting a "Special Lecture and Exchange with UP Diliman Students with the Participants of the 77th Japan-America Student Conference (JASC) " on 4 June 2025, 8:30 PM - 1:00 PM, PHT (GMT+8), at the Seminar Room, GT-Toyota Asian Center, UP Diliman. The event is free and open to UP Diliman students only. Online registration is REQUIRED due to limited seating.

ABOUT THE EXCHANGE

The Japan-America Student Conference (JASC) Executive Committee is organizing a visit to the University of the Philippines on 4 June 2025, as part of their conference program. The delegation seeks to engage in a meaningful academic exchange through lectures and a discussion session with students specializing in international relations, with a focus on East Asia. This visit aims to foster dialogue, mutual understanding, and collaboration between Filipino, American, and Japanese students.


ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

KARL IAN CHENG CHUA, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, UP Asian Center

Karl Ian Cheng Chua, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at the Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman. He served a Professorial Lecturer at the UP Asian Center. He has recently completed his posting as a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Social Sciences, Hitotsubashi University. He serves on the editorial board of East Asian Journal of Popular Culture,Comics Studies: Aesthetics, Histories, and Practices and Social Science Diliman


JOCELYN O. CELERO, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, UP Asian Center

Dr. Jocelyn O. Celero is an Associate Professor and the Assistant to the Dean for External and Cultural Affairs at the Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman. She earned her Ph.D. in International Studies from Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan, in 2016, following an M.A. in Global Studies from Sophia University in 2012. Prior to her studies in Japan, Dr. Celero completed an M.A. in Asian Studies, specializing in Southeast Asian Studies, at the University of the Philippines Diliman in 2008. Dr. Celero's research interests encompass contemporary Japan, Japan-Philippine relations, Filipino migration to Japan, Japan and Southeast Asia relations, and family and youth studies.

The Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman offers M.A. degrees in Asian Studies with four fields of specialization: Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia. The UP Asian Center also has an M.A. program in Philippine Studies that allows students to major in Philippine society and culture, Philippine foreign relations, or Philippine development studies. It also offers a Ph.D. program in Philippine Studies in conjunction with the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.
