The UP Asian Center will host the onsite book talk of Barkong Pabrika ng Alimasag: Bersiyong Filipino ng Kanikōsen ni Takiji Kobayashi by Dr. Gonzalo A. Campoamor on 18 September 2025, 2 PM (GMT+8), at the ASEAN and Japan Halls, Asian Center, UP Diliman. The event is open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to register online.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Isinasalaysay ng nobelang Barkong Pabrika ng Alimasag ang karanasan ng mga manggagawa’t mangingisdang lulan ng Hakkō Maru, isang barkong humuhuli’t naglalata ng mga alimasag sa Hilagang Pasipiko sa Dagat ng Okhotsk na malapit sa baybayin ng Kamchatka. Malayo sa kani-kanilang bayang tinubuan ang mga walang-ngalang manggagawa’t mangingisda. Isa-isang ipinamalas ng awtor na si Takiji Kobayashi ang kanilang pagdurusa hanggang sa masapit nila ang rurok ng paghihirap at magdesisyong mag-alsa.

The novel tells the story the workers and fisherfolk from Hakkō Maru, a ship that catches and cans crabs in the Okhotsk Sea, off the coast of Kamchatka, in the Northern Pacific. The workers and fisherfolk worked far from their hometowns. Takiji Kobayashi shows how they suffered until they finally decided to revolt.
Barkong Pabrika ng Alimasag by Dr. Gonzalo Campoamor II is published by the University of the Philippines Press. GONZALO A. CAMPOAMOR II, Ph.D.

Dr. Gonzalo A. Campoamor II, Ph.D. is a Professor at the Asian Center, UP Diliman. He previously served as an Associate Professor at the UP Department of Filipino and Philippine Literature. He completed his MA in Filipino in UP Diliman, and his MA and Ph.D. in History from Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, where he was a Monbukagakusho (Japanese Government) scholar. Dr. Campoamor has served as editor for several journals including Humanities Diliman, Science Diliman, and Social Science Diliman. He has several critical works that has been published in several journals including “Japanese Wartime Intellectuals: The Case of Miki Kiyoshi during the Japanese Occupation in the Philippines” (Asian Studies: Journal of Critical Perspectives in Asia, 2016), “Midya at Pasismo” (Media at Lipunan, 2014), and “Elias and the Rizalian Middle Class Imagination of Bonifacio and Revolution” (Salita ng Sandata: Bonifacio’s Legacies to the People’s Struggles, 2013). Dr. Campoamor has been a recipient of numerous awards and grants, including the Sumitomo Foundation 2014 Grant for Japan-Related Research Projects, Japan Student Services Organization Follow-up Research fellowship (2013), and several UP Centennial Faculty Grants.

SHIGEHIRO MATSUDA
Director, Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC)
Mr. Shigehiro Matsuda is the Director of the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) at the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines. In this capacity, he leads cultural diplomacy initiatives that promote Japanese culture and strengthen Japan–Philippines relations through public events, youth and sports collaborations, and community engagement. He has represented the Embassy in activities such as the donation of football equipment to the Philippine Football Federation, cultural showcases like the “Joyful Christmas Ikebana” exhibit, and gatherings of the Philippine Federation of Japan Alumni, where he actively fosters friendship and mutual understanding. He also works closely with local institutions and media partners to highlight the role of cultural and informational exchange in deepening bilateral ties.
GALILEO S. ZAFRA, Ph.D.
Director, University of the Philippines Press
Dr. Galileo S. Zafra is a Professor, researcher, writer, and translator. He completed his Ph.D. in Philippine Literature at the Department of Filipino and Philippine Literature, University of the Philippines Diliman. He also teaches courses in literature, language, and Filipino studies. He has published books such as Balagtas: Kasaysayan at Antolohiya (1999), and edited the Sawikaan series, Mga Salita ng Taon, and Ambagan mga salita Mula sa ibat ibat Wika sa Filipinas, both projects of the Filipinas Institute of Translation at UP Press. He is also an active contributor to academic journals in various disciplines and cultural institutions.
